Dry hit, what to do straight away and how to avoid it

Dry hit, what to do straight away and how to avoid it

A dry, harsh puff, a taste of scorched cotton that lingers, and the almost automatic urge to press the button again to check. That second press is exactly what makes things worse. A dry hit is rarely the end of the world, but what you do in the next minute often decides whether the coil survives. The trick is reading the clues, because the same ruined puff can come from quite different causes, and each one calls for a specific decision.

What to do straight after a dry hit

A dry hit happens when the coil fires while its cotton is not soaked with enough e-liquid. The wick scorches instead of vaporising, which explains the dry, acrid puff and the burnt taste.

The right response comes in four steps, taken in this order.

  1. Let go of the button and do not take another puff straight away. Every extra fire on dry cotton burns it a little more.
  2. Check the e-liquid level in the tank and top up if it is low.
  3. Leave the device to rest for a few minutes so the cotton can soak again. With a brand new coil, allow five to ten minutes.
  4. Come back at a slightly lower wattage than before for one short test puff.

If that test puff tastes normal, the incident is over. If the burnt taste comes back unchanged, the wick is damaged and no setting will rescue it.

One last check avoids a false trail. A device that refuses to fire and shows a message on screen is reporting a contact or detection fault, not a dry hit, which our guide to the no coil detected message deals with.

Three questions to find the cause

Once things have settled, three questions usually reveal what starved the wick. Ask them in this order, from the easiest to check to the most technical.

Was the tank almost empty?

This is the most ordinary cause. E-liquid reaches the cotton through small openings on the side of the coil, and when the level drops too far the supply becomes patchy and the wick dries out from one puff to the next. UK tanks and pods hold 2 ml at most, so the level falls quickly. Top up before the tank runs dry rather than waiting for the first suspicious taste.

Had the coil just been changed?

A new coil arrives with completely dry cotton. Screwed in and fired straight away, it has not given the e-liquid time to travel through the whole wick, so the first puffs land on fibres that are still dry.

This scenario is easy to recognise, because the dry hit arrives on the first or second puff even though the tank is full.

Is the coil heating faster than the wick can drink?

Every coil carries a wattage range printed on the part itself. Above the maximum, it vaporises e-liquid faster than the cotton can soak it back up. The typical symptom is a decent taste at first, then a dry puff as soon as you take several in a row.

Two factors make that imbalance worse. A thick e-liquid, above 50% vegetable glycerine (VG), moves through cotton more slowly and needs a coil designed for it. Puffs taken back to back without a pause also leave the wick no time to soak again.

Saving or replacing the coil after a dry hit

A simple test settles the question, and it saves you both from binning a part that still works and from persisting with a wick that is gone.

Fill the tank, leave it for five to ten minutes, then take one short puff at low wattage. If the taste is back to normal, the coil has survived. If the burnt taste lingers despite the refill and the rest, the cotton is charred and the only option is a new coil.

A coil that has been through a dry hit can also fade more quietly over the following days, with less vapour, a duller taste and flavour that never quite returns. Those are the signs of a worn coil, and it is better replaced without waiting.

Pod kit, tank or rebuildable, what changes

The logic stays the same everywhere, but the final step depends on what comes apart and what gets replaced.

On a pod kit

When the coil is built into the pod, there is nothing to take apart. If the refill test fails, the whole pod is replaced. On a pod kit with a removable coil, only the coil changes, and it is primed like any new part.

On a tank

A tank follows the steps described above. A burnt taste that returns on several new coils in a row points instead to a wattage set too high or an e-liquid too thick for the coil series in use, covered in our guide to the Zeus tank that leaks or burns.

On a rebuildable

On a rebuildable atomiser you do not throw the coil away, you rewick it. Cotton that is too thick, packed too tightly inside the coil or sagging into the juice channels slows the supply, and dry hits then come in series. After a new build, test at low wattage and work your way up.

Temperature control, a safety net with conditions

Some mods offer a temperature control mode. It relies on a property of the wire, since with certain metals the resistance in ohms rises as the wire heats up. The mod measures that change to estimate the temperature of the coil, then reduces or cuts the power when the temperature spikes, which is precisely what happens when the cotton dries out.

The condition is strict. The mode only works with a coil made of nickel (Ni200), titanium or stainless steel, and only on a mod that supports it. A kanthal or nichrome coil, whose resistance barely changes with heat, does not allow the calculation. Even on compatible kit, this mode adds to the habits below, it does not replace them.

Four habits that keep a dry hit away

Prevention comes down to four simple habits, each one answering a cause covered above, and none of them takes more than a few seconds.

Prime every new coil

Before fitting a new coil, put a few drops of e-liquid on the cotton visible through its side openings and down its central channel. Fit it, fill the tank, then wait five to ten minutes. A few draws without pressing the button finish pulling e-liquid into the wick, as our guide to Geek Vape coil life explains.

Top up before you reach the bottom

Never let the tank empty completely, and do not press the button when it is dry. With a 2 ml tank, a glance at the window before you pick the device up again is enough to avoid the bad surprise.

Stay inside the wattage range

Set the power slightly below the minimum shown on the coil, then work up gradually without going over the maximum. With a high VG e-liquid, choose a coil built for it.

Space out your puffs

Taking puffs back to back forces the wick to soak faster than it can. Leaving a few seconds between puffs gives the cotton time to recover, especially at higher wattage.

FAQ

These questions often come up after a first incident. They cover cases that the steps above do not address directly.

Dry hit or harsh throat hit, how do you tell them apart?

Throat hit is the catch you feel as the vapour passes, and it depends mostly on nicotine strength, the PG/VG ratio and the wattage. In the UK, nicotine e-liquid is capped at 20 mg/ml and sold in bottles of 10 ml at most. Throat hit never brings a burnt taste, whereas a dry puff tasting of scorched cotton is the sign of a dry or worn wick.

Can a ceramic coil give a dry hit too?

Yes. Cotton or ceramic, the wick has to stay soaked to vaporise properly. A ceramic coil is therefore primed in the same way, with a few drops of e-liquid before its first fire and a rest once the tank is full.

How do you prime an auto-draw pod kit?

On a pod kit without a button, every draw starts the heating. To take dry draws safely, remove the pod from the battery and draw through the mouthpiece, since the coil cannot fire while it is disconnected. Then refit the pod and respect the resting time.

Should you change e-liquid after a dry hit?

Not necessarily. The burnt taste comes from scorched cotton, not from the bottle. If the trouble started when you moved to a higher VG e-liquid, however, the pairing of liquid and coil is at fault, and a thinner e-liquid or a suitable coil solves it at the source.

Are high wattage coils more exposed?

They vaporise more e-liquid with every puff, so the wick has less margin. A fast pace or a thick e-liquid shows up sooner. Staying inside the wattage range and choosing an e-liquid suited to the coil matter even more there.

Remembering the right response to a dry hit

Faced with a dry puff, order matters more than speed. Stopping, topping up, resting and testing at low wattage tells you whether the coil is saved or ready for the bin. The three questions then point to the cause, and the four habits take care of the rest.

A dry hit is best read as a message from the wick, and the same habit of observation works for most of the small hardware niggles you come across while vaping.
