No coil detected: what to check, in order

Written by Sandrine Vaillant · · 7 min reading time

The screen reads no coil detected and nothing heats. The first reaction is almost always the same: screw the tank on harder, hold the fire button down longer, often both at once. Those hurried gestures nearly always miss the real cause, because they skip the order of checks that would find it in under a minute.

The first thing to do about no coil detected

Before taking anything apart, confirm the coil is actually in place and properly seated. On a screw-in tank, one turn too many in the wrong direction is enough to break the contact while nothing looks loose to the eye.

Take the tank or the pod off and look at the central pin, the copper or brass one in the middle. A dark or sticky deposit there stops current passing even when the coil appears to be screwed down properly. A dry cotton bud or a wooden cocktail stick is all you need to wipe it clean.

Then put the coil back, screwing it in by hand to a soft stop and no further. On a clip-in system, take the pod out, check that the two gold contacts are not covered in dried liquid, and push it firmly back until it clicks. That single sequence resolves most of the cases caused by nothing more than a poor contact.

If the no coil detected message survives that

When cleaning and reseating are not enough, the problem is either the coil itself or a gap between its resistance and what the mod is prepared to accept. Each possibility is checked separately, in the order below.

Start with wicking. A brand new coil that has never seen liquid can be detected intermittently, or not at all, while the cotton around the contacts is still dry. Fill the tank, wait a good five minutes, and only then try firing.

Next, compare the resistance to the window your device supports. Every mod publishes an accepted range in its manual, and a coil below that floor, which includes some very low rebuildable builds, produces a no coil detected message rather than a polite warning. Read the range for your own device rather than a figure quoted for someone else’s.

One habit saves a lot of guessing here. Note which of the three checks actually cleared the fault, because a mod that needs its thread cleaning every week is telling you something different from one that only ever complains about new coils. The pattern matters more than any single fix.

Then look at the 510 thread on the mod. The device side gets dirty too. A cotton bud lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol, passed gently over the metal thread of the mod, clears the residue that stops the contact rising to meet the circuit.

When to suspect a faulty coil or pod

If the coil works on another device, or if a new coil reproduces the same message on the mod in question, the diagnosis narrows sharply. The fault then belongs to the part, not to your technique.

A coil that has taken a knock, that was cross-threaded and then forced, or whose centre pin is slightly pushed in, loses contact permanently. No amount of cleaning corrects a deformed pin inside the body of the coil itself, a problem that sits alongside the usual causes of premature wear covered in our guide to Geek Vape coil life.

An unstable contact does not always announce itself as a clean no coil detected. On some mods the same fault first shows up as an atomizer short message, then flips over to complete non-detection once the contact degrades a little further.

On refillable pods, the internal clip wears with repeated refills. After several cycles the contact loses tension, the message returns more and more often, and eventually settles in for good.

The particular case of clip-in pod systems

On pods without a thread, there is no screw to tighten. The only point of contact is mechanical, held by the pressure of the chassis on the two gold pins. A pod that is fractionally misaligned on reassembly produces exactly the same symptom as a coil unscrewed on a conventional tank.

Take the pod out, wipe both contact points with a dry cotton bud, then check that no dried liquid is forming a bridge between the pins. Push it back with a firm vertical movement, without any angle, until you feel it lock.

Alignment is worth a second look on devices carried loose in a pocket or a bag. A pod that has been knocked sideways repeatedly can sit a fraction proud of its housing without looking wrong, and the contact then depends on how the device happens to be held. If the message comes and goes as you move the device, that is the explanation rather than the electronics.

If the message reappears with a pod straight out of its packaging, change the pod before you suspect the device. A factory fault on the pins remains more common than an actual failure on the mod side, and UK retailers replace sealed stock readily enough.

The point where you stop and have the device checked

Some signals are no longer a matter for home repair. If the device is unusually hot to the touch while the message is displayed, if the cell looks swollen or deformed, or if the 510 contact is oxidised deeply enough to leave a mark on the cotton bud, stop handling it.

Never force a contact that resists, never file or bend a metal part inside a live thread, and do not carry on using a device whose cell shows any sign of swelling. Those gestures create a real risk and they never address the cause of the no coil detected message. The signs of a 21700 battery at the end of its life follow the same logic of caution: at the slightest doubt you replace, you do not repair.

In those specific cases, remove the cell if the model allows it, or simply leave the device alone, and have it examined by a vape shop or the manufacturer’s after-sales service. Once the simple checks are exhausted, that is the only safe step left.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my device say no coil detected with a brand new coil?

Most often the coil has not yet been saturated with liquid, or it is not screwed down to the stop. A manufacturing fault on the centre pin is possible but considerably rarer.

Are no coil detected and no atomizer the same message?

Both describe the same absence of electrical contact between the mod and the coil. The exact wording depends only on the manufacturer and the firmware version installed.

Can the message come from the mod itself?

Yes, a dirty 510 thread or a slightly depressed contact pin on the device side produces the same symptom as a faulty coil. Testing a known good coil on another mod settles it.

Should I change the coil at the first message?

No. Always start with cleaning the thread and reseating the part, since those two gestures resolve the majority of cases at no cost at all.

How long should I wait after filling a new coil?

Allow five to ten minutes before the first fire, and longer on coils holding a lot of cotton, so the liquid can reach the whole of the wick.

No coil detected: what to remember before you reconnect

Faced with no coil detected, order matters more than force. Contact, wicking, resistance window, then the condition of the part itself: each step eliminates one cause before you move to the next, and nothing is ever forced.

The great majority of these messages clear with a cleaned thread and a careful reassembly. The remainder point to a part that needs replacing, never to an improvised repair on a device under power, and that same step by step logic applies to almost every error message a mod can display.
