Atomizer short: what your mod detected
You screw the tank on, press the button, and the screen reads atomizer short. Nothing heats. The usual response is to tighten it harder, then to fit a new coil, and usually neither works. An atomizer short message does not appear at random, though: it points at one precise family of causes, and those causes can be tested in a logical order. What matters is knowing which to rule out first, and above all not starting with the most expensive one.
What your mod detected when it shows atomizer short
An atomizer short message means the protection circuit measured a resistance that was abnormally low, then cut the power before any real current flowed. In plain terms, it read something that looks like a direct contact between the positive pin and the earth of the chassis.
That measurement happens on every press of the fire button, in a few milliseconds. Manufacturers including Geekvape publish the same guidance in their support pages: the board refuses to fire as soon as the reading falls below the window it supports. Your mod has not broken down, it has declined to heat.
The practical consequence is reassuring. The fault sits almost always in the electrical contact or in the coil, and only rarely in the electronics themselves. Both of those can be checked in a few minutes with nothing more specialised than a cotton bud.
Atomizer short, no atomizer and check atomizer are three different things
These three messages come from the same sensor but describe opposite situations, and confusing them wastes an evening. British forum threads mix them constantly, which is why the same bad advice keeps circulating.
An atomizer short reading is a value close to zero. The board suspects current would pass with nothing to slow it down, which is the short circuit scenario and the one this article is about.

A check atomizer reading is an inconsistent one. The value changes from one press to the next, so contact exists but will not hold, usually because of a dirty thread or a deformed seal that lets the tank sit a fraction too high.
The possible causes, from the most common to the rarest
Four situations cover very nearly everything you will meet in daily use. They appear here in the order you should test them, from the quickest gesture to the replacement of a part, and there is no benefit in skipping ahead because the first is also the most frequent.
The first is e-liquid or residue on the 510 pin. A few drops that have worked their way down the thread are enough to distort the reading, because liquid conducts poorly and sweetened residues gradually oxidise the contacts, which corrupts the reading for good.
The second is a coil that is crushed, cracked or badly seated. A deformed heating element can touch the metal chimney of the tank, and on a rebuildable, a coil sitting too close to the wall of the chamber produces exactly the same result.
The third is a 510 pin pushed down by overtightening. Screwing harder fixes nothing at all: it simply drives the spring-loaded contact into the bottom of its housing, where it can no longer rise to meet the tank, and the reading goes haywire.
The fourth is a coil outside the range the device accepts. Every mod publishes a supported resistance window in its manual, and outside that window the chipset blocks on principle, even when the coil is brand new and completely sound. Read your own manual rather than a figure quoted from someone else’s device.
The checks to run, in order
These steps are done with the device switched off, take under ten minutes, and settle the great majority of cases without a trip to the shop.
Unscrew the tank and wipe the thread on the mod with a cotton bud lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol, then let it dry completely before reassembling. Next, check that the centre pin springs back when you press it with a fingertip, and if it stays down, ease it up gently with the tip of a fine screwdriver rather than anything sharp.
Then inspect the coil against the light. A burn mark, blackened cotton or any visible deformation means it is due for replacement rather than another attempt. Screw the tank back on without forcing, up to contact and no further, since the last quarter turn is what caused the problem for a good many people.
If the message survives all that, cross-test. Fit your tank on a different mod, or a different tank on the same mod, and the single manipulation tells you which of the two components is at fault.
The case that fools everybody: a brand new coil
Plenty of vapers conclude the mod is broken because the message appeared immediately after a coil change. It is frequently the other way round. A pack of coils can contain a badly crimped piece, and no manufacturer has a zero return rate on that.
The test that settles it takes one gesture: refit the old coil, worn out as it is. If the device fires again, the new part is the culprit, and UK retailers generally replace a faulty coil from a sealed pack without argument. The resistance shown on screen, when it appears at all, is a useful clue in itself, since a figure well away from the value printed on the coil points straight at the part.
Stopping the message from coming back
The first lever is how you fill. A tank filled to the very brim eventually pushes liquid up the chimney and down towards the pin, especially after a change of altitude or a night lying flat in a bag.
The second is thread maintenance. A weekly pass over the 510 pin, dry or with a cotton bud, is enough to stop residue building up, and it matters most with sweetened e-liquids that leave a sticky film behind them.
The third is choosing parts that belong together. A coil matched to your hardware, and a mod whose supported window you have actually read, spare you from discovering an incompatibility at the worst possible moment. Can I carry on vaping and ignore the message?
No, the mod will not fire while the reading stays abnormal. The protection runs permanently and there is no menu setting anywhere that lets you bypass it.
Could the message come from the battery rather than the tank?
It is uncommon, but a deeply discharged or tired cell can distort the reading at start-up. Fitting a freshly charged cell rules that out in about thirty seconds.
Should I clean the contacts with water?
Not on the electronics. Isopropyl alcohol evaporates without leaving anything behind, water does not, and it can sit trapped in the housing around the pin.
